Abstract

Background: osteoma is a benign neoplasm of bone tissue, uncommon in the jaw, of undefined etiology. Generally asymptomatic, but it can produce asymmetry and functional alteration. It must be differentiated from other bone lesions such as exostosis and may be associated with Gardner's syndrome. The indicated treatment is surgical.
Objective:
to present a rare case of peripheral osteoma isolated in mandibular coronoid apophysis due to its clinical and imaging characteristics, as well as its treatment.
Clinical case:
a 17-year-old male patient with increased volume in the left facial region, in an extra-oral examination, a lesion of approximately 2 cm of the normal skin, beneath the left zygomatic arch was palpated, intra-orally no alterations were observed, computed tomography shows image of rounded bone density of smooth surface in left coronoid apophysis. Under general anesthesia and orally, the lesion is resected. After two years the evolution has been satisfactory.
Conclusions:
the clinical method, imaging and histopathological studies allowed us to diagnose an infrequent case of peripheral osteoma, isolated in coronoid process, whose surgical treatment and evolution were satisfactory.
