Flowchart for orthodontic emergency care from the community in times of COVID-19

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Although dentistry procedures in orthodontics are generally considered optional, there are situations in which they are a priority.
Objective:
To develop a flowchart for orthodontic emergency care from the community in times of COVID-19.
Methods:
A qualitative development and innovation study was carried out; during the first quarter of 2021 at the Faculty of Dentistry of Camagüey. A flow chart was validated through the succession of logical steps that allow patients, parents or guardians to arrive at the solution (from home) of some orthodontic emergencies, so as not to have to unnecessarily expose themselves to biological risk in the dental clinic. The criteria of 15 experts were used, based on their clinical experiences on the subject.
Results:
The most common emergencies were identified according to their classification and type of orthodontic appliance, it was determined which can be managed at home and which require personal assistance to the consultation. In all the evaluation sessions, the opinions were favorable and suggestions were made for their improvement.
Conclusions: These recommendations are based on the best evidence available to date, with COVID-19 being an emerging disease. If you are facing a real case of qualified orthodontic emergency, it can be resolved from home following the guidelines of the proposed flow chart.
