Relationship between Type of Malocclusion and Self-Esteem in School Adolescents from Chiclayo
Abstract
Introduction: Dental malocclusion can negatively affect facial aesthetics and thus self-esteem, especially during adolescence, a critical stage for self-concept development.
Objective: To determine the relationship between the type of malocclusion and the level of self-esteem in teenagers from public and private schools in Chiclayo in 2025.
Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational study was conducted. The sample included 234 students from the fourth and fifth years of secondary school from two educational institutions (one public and one private). Malocclusion was assessed using Angle's classification, and self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Statistical analysis included frequencies, percentages, chi-square test, and Spearman correlation.
Results: Class II malocclusion was the most prevalent in both schools. A statistically significant association was found between the type of malocclusion and self-esteem level (p<0.05). Students with class II and III malocclusion had a higher frequency of low self-esteem, particularly male students from public institutions.
Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between the type of malocclusion and self-esteem in school teenagers. Early identification and timely treatment may help improve the emotional and social well-being of teenagers.
