Nephrotic Syndrome: relevant clinical elements
Abstract
Introduction: Among the glomerular síndromes we find the nephrotic syndrome, whose frequency has increased globally, since it is present not only in the group of primary glomerulopathies but also in a comprehensive set of systemic diseases such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, systemic erythematosus lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, among others. However, the considerable increase that has been observed in the incidence and prevalence of the nephrotic syndrome is undoubtedly due to the pandemic of diabetes mellitus and advanced-stage diabetic nephropathy, which represent its main etiology.
Objective: To expose the relevant clinical elements of the nephrotic syndrome, including the causes, its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.
Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out using academic search engines such as SciELO, Elsevier, Scopus, and 29 sources in Spanish and English languages were taken into account, national and international, with 52 % of the last five years.
Results: This syndrome presents a fairly characteristic clinical picture where one of the most cardinal manifestations is edema, especially in lax regions. The hemodynamic and metabolic changes that occur are specifically due to glomerular basement membrane disorders. The quantification of proteinuria and the general evaluation of the patient is important to prevent thrombotic, metabolic, and cardiovascular complications in these patients.
Conclusions: Early and adequate therapeutic action should focus on the use of corticosteroids to reduce glomerular damage and inflammation and the drugs responsible for reversing the systemic manifestations.
