Therapeutic adherence in hypertensive and/or diabetic patients admitted to the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Joaquín Albarrán
Abstract
Background: the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus is high globally and is predicted to continue to increase. These diseases require long term treatment, requiring adequate compliance with therapy for optimal control and to minimize the occurrence of complications in patients. Inadequate adherence to treatment leads to increased hospital admissions, economic and psychosocial repercussions and in the patients´quality of life.
Objective: to determine the degree of therapeutic adherence of hypertensive and/or diabetic patients hospitalized in the Internal Medicine wards.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and transversal study was conducted between September, 2018 and February, 2019 in 113 hypertensive and/or diabetic patients hospitalized with pharmacological treatment. The variables studied were sex, age, schooling level, disease suffered, variety of indicated pharmacological treatment, level of compliance and causes of non-adherence.
Results: adherence to treatment was 60.2 %. Patients over 80 years old, women (63.6 %) and those suffering from Diabetes and Arterial Hypertension showed greater adherence. The most frequent causes of non-adherence were forgetfulness and feeling good.
Conclusions: adherence to pharmacological therapy in hypertensive and/or diabetic patients hospitalized in Internal Medicine is low. The most frequently identified factors of poor adherence are forgetting to take the medicines and feeling well.
