Infertility in Cuban couples: from prevention to assisted reproduction

Background: infertility was defined as a health problem characterized by the impossibility of carrying a pregnancy to full term in a period of one year. Given its prevalence and the excellent results obtained by the province of Matanzas in addressing this problem as part of the National Program for Attention to the Infertile Couple, it was considered necessary to know how to prevent its main causes and which are the alternative solutions.
Objective: to identify the causal factors of infertility as a health problem, for the sake of prevention.
Methods: a documentary analysis of the most recent literature published on the topic was carried out using trusted search engines such as Google academic, SciELO and Scopus. Thirty sources in Spanish and English were used for the preparation of this article; 90 % of them are from the last 5 years, where the 55 % represent the last 3 years.
Development: the sources consulted agreed that the causes of infertility can be common or specific to each sex. In females, age, ovulatory and uterine-tubal factors predominated; while in men, sperm defects. Some factors can be prevented from Primary Health Care. There are assisted reproduction techniques that are an alternative in achieving a pregnancy.
Conclusions: infertility is a multifactorial disorder that affects both sexes. In order to treat it, cutting-edge techniques have been developed in the field of assisted reproduction.
