Introduction: Cuba demonstrated the importance of active screening in the early detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2). The rapid expansion of the coronavirus prompted initiatives to generate unprecedented knowledge production, aimed at stopping the pandemic as soon as possible. In response to this need, the publication of research has been accelerated and, consequently, the communication and scientific publication systems are facing the challenge of an enormous amount of knowledge generated in a short period of time.
Objective: To characterize the student scientific production on COVID-19 in a group of students from the Medical Sciences of Camagüey during the active research.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out in September 2021. A survey was prepared and applied to 416 students of the Medical Sciences from 8 health areas of the Camagüey municipality. The variables studied were faculties, academic years, the carrying out or not of research and publications related to active research.
Results: The largest number of students to whom the survey was applied belonged to the medical school. More than 34.4% of the surveyed students carried out research and only 6.7% published it. Of the health areas where the survey was applied, the student scientific activity related to the confrontation with COVID-19 in the polyclinics stands out: Rodolfo Ramírez Esquivel and Ignacio Agramonte; not being so in the polyclinics: Este and Julio Antonio Mella.
Conclusions: Emphasis should be placed on the need for greater support in the research training of students of Medical Sciences. This objective must be a premise to promote interest and curiosity that lead to a better understanding of various topics, and to the discovery and deepening of new knowledge.
