Abstract

Background: systemic hypertension is the essential adult chronic disease that increases the cardiovascular risk of greater prevalence worldwide, the goal of early diagnosis and adequate antihypertensive treatment is to reduce morbidity and mortality and significantly reduce the risk of complications due to the consequences of that disease.
Objective: to demonstrate the utility of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in clinical practice.
Methods: a bibliographic review was made to know the importance of the use of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, a total of 30 references obtained from databases such as PubMed, SciELO and Hinary were consulted in Spanish and English, of which 21 articles fulfilled with the requirements of the investigation. The historical-logical method was used for the introduction and development of the work and the one of analysis and synthesis to establish conclusions.
Results: ambulatory blood pressure monitoring helps to establish a more accurate diagnosis and evaluate the response of the hypertensive patient to treatment. It is a non-invasive technical method that aims to obtain a blood pressure measurement during a 24-hour period on an outpatient basis.
Conclusions: the clinical importance of the monitoring lies in the possibility of evaluating and controlling hypertension, predicting target organ injury and establishing chronotherapy in the hypertensive patient.
